Electronic Payments System (SPEI)

Learn what it consists of and how to use it

It is now possible to avoid the inconvenience of having to travel to make payments to family, friends or anyone else. A safe way to make payments is through SPEI, but what it is and how you can use it, we will show you.

What is SPEI?

It is a system developed by Banco de México and commercial banks, with which you can send and receive payments or electronic transactions in a matter of seconds.

What do you need?

• To have a bank account and internet banking service. - Internet access or mobile payment service. - Know the bank and the Standardized Banking Code (CLABE) or debit card number of the person or company you are going to pay.

How does it work?

The participants are:

1. Ordenante: persona que desea transferir dinero desde su

cuenta bancaria.

2.  Beneficiary: the person who receives the money from the transfer in his or her bank account.

3. Issuing bank: the (commercial) bank that holds the payer's account.

4. Receiving bank: the bank that holds the beneficiary's account.

5. Banco de México: central bank that debits the amount from the issuing bank's account and credits the receiving bank's account.

If you are transferring through SPEI:

Transfers through SPEI are made from a bank account. To instruct your bank you can use the internet banking service and the procedure is as follows:

1. Register the account of your beneficiary that will receive the transfer.

2. Enter the section of transfers or payments to third parties and provide the transfer data (account, beneficiary's bank and amount of the operation).

In the data you must choose a reference number (folio of up to seven digits) and a payment concept (a legend), this data will be sent to the receiver and will allow him/her to identify the payment.

Do you issue payment receipts?

If you have any doubts about the completion of your transaction, you can check its status in the SPEI Information Module (MI-SPEI), the link is: www.banxico.org.mx/cep/.

There you can also obtain an electronic receipt of payments made in the last 45 business days.

What can you do if your payment has not "arrived"?

First check the status of your payment

through MI-SPEI, you only need the "Reference Number" that you indicated at the moment of instructing the payment or the "Tracking Key" that your bank gave you at the moment of making the transfer.

Once you have verified that the payment does not exist in the system, has not been settled or was returned, you can go to your bank with a printout of the result of your inquiry to find out why the payment was not made.
